New Dual-Drug Asthma Medication Approved by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Airsupra, a new rescue medication for adults with asthma. This is the first drug to combine albuterol and budesonide. Airsupra is intended for the as-needed treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to reduce the risk of asthma attacks in patients aged 18 and older. It is also the first medication approved in the United States to contain an inhaled corticosteroid as a reliever rather than as a controller of asthma symptoms. The FDA evaluated the drug’s effectiveness in reducing severe asthma attacks in a randomized, double-blind, controlled study with patients who had moderate-to-severe asthma. Airsupra is taken through two oral inhalations, and patients should not use more than six doses, a total of 12 inhalations, in a 24-hour period. The drug was granted approval to Avillion and AstraZeneca.
